Un engagement Suisse au service de l’histoire et de l’innovation
As a Swiss foundation dedicated to the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage, the Fondation Etrillard supports projects that explore the relationship between memory, research, and contemporary creation, both in Switzerland and internationally.
In line with this mission, the Foundation is supporting the Panorama Terapixel project, developed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and presented at the Bern History Museum as part of the exhibition “The Battle of Murten: Staging a Triumph,” running from February 25, 2026, to May 9, 2027.
The Panorama Terapixel project offers a chance to rediscover the Panorama of the Battle of Morat, a monumental work created in the late 19th century to commemorate the victory of the Swiss Confederates over the troops of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, at the Battle of Morat. This spectacular fresco, nearly one hundred meters long, has left a deep imprint on the Swiss collective imagination. It illustrates how Swiss history has also been shaped by imagery, staging, and visual narrative.
Thanks to a very high-resolution digital system, Panorama Terapixel offers a unique perspective on the artwork: every detail becomes accessible, and every scene can be observed, analyzed, and contextualized. Here, digital technology becomes a tool for knowledge in the service of research, cultural outreach, and education. It broadens access to cultural heritage while offering a fresh perspective on historical works.
The exhibition goes beyond the mere narrative of the Battle of Morat to offer a broader reflection:
-
How do historical images shape collective memory?
-
Who produces these stories, in what context, and with what intentions?
By bringing together history, the humanities, and technological innovation, Panorama Terapixel sheds light on the mechanisms behind the construction of historical narratives and invites the public to take a critical look at images of the past.
By supporting this project, the Fondation Etrillard reaffirms an approach that remains true to its values:
-
to promote scientific research in Switzerland
-
support leading cultural institutions
-
promote dialogue between cultural heritage, innovation, and contemporary society
Thus, Panorama Terapixel exemplifies the Foundation’s deep conviction: cultural heritage is not static—it is understood, examined, and passed on through fresh perspectives that connect the past to the challenges of the present.
